Victor Hugo's powerful 1831 melodrama is brought to the screen by Disney in this animated offering. It glides over the corruption of church and politics and concentrates on hunchback Quasimodo (voice of Tom Hulce) who has been hidden in the bell tower of Notre Dame Cathedral by his adopted father Frollo (voice of Tony Jay). Quasimodo's gargoyle friends–Victor (voice of Charles Kimbrough), Hugo (voice of Jason Alexander), and Laverne (voice of Mary Wickes)– encourage him to attend a festival where he meets sensuous gypsy Esmeralda (voice of Demi Moore) and handsome soldier Phoebus (voice of Kevin Kline). Now, Frollo's cruel tactics rise to the fore as he tries to destroy the gypsies' home. Quasimodo comes to their aid, and, by story's end, Phoebus and Esmeralda go off together, and Quasimodo returns to the bell tower.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame II 2002 G, 68 min. Genre: Animation / Family / Drama / Musical
Director: Bradley Raymond Cast: Tom Hulce, Jason Alexander, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Charles Kimbrough, Kevin Kline, Michael McKean, Demi Moore, Haley Joel Osment, Jane Withers, Paul Kandel, Jim Cummings, Frank Welker, Joe Lala, April Winchell, Newell Alexander
Most of the original cast return in this animated Disney direct-to-video/DVD sequel. The son of Esmeralda and Phoebus, Zephyr (voice of Haley Joel Osment), now helps Quasimodo (voice of Tom Hulce) ring the cathedral bell. Zephyr and Quasimodo visit a traveling circus owned by the evil Sarousch (voice of Michael McKean), and Quasimodo falls for Sarousch's assistant Madellaine (voice of Jennifer Love Hewitt). But, Sarousch is plotting to steal the cathedral bell and forces Madellaine to help him. Quasimodo attempts to foil the plot and looks beyond the obvious in his quest to find true love with Madellaine. OK for the young ones.
