Penn won the Cannes Film Festival award for "Best Actor" for his role in this film.

  This movie is a parody of soap opera stars and how their egos affect personal lives of those around them. Leading lady Celeste Talbut (Sally Field), "Soap Queen," has problems keeping her professional status and living in the real world when her TV show is declining in popularity. Her co-star Montana Moorehead (Cathy Moriarty) is seducing the show's executive producer David Barnes (Robert Downey Jr.) and is trying to convince him to write Celeste off the show. Montana wants him to rehire Jeffrey (Kevin Kline) and turn Celeste's character into a murderess. Celeste's friend, head writer Rose Schwartz (Whoopi Goldberg), does come to her aid and tries to help her sanity when she takes Celeste to the mall where fans cheer her.
