Frank was born in Brooklyn, but his parents Angela (Emily Watson) and Malachy (Robert Carlyle) take the family home to Limerick, Ireland where they suffer heartbreak and tribulations often caused by Malachy's heavy drinking. The story, however, also represents hope, for through it all Frank dreams of escaping his plight and moving to America.
