Not only does Tracy go after the "Miss Hairspray" title, she also wants the show to be integrated. The year is 1962, and the Black dancers are not allowed to perform on the show on a daily basis. When they do perform, the show is hosted by Motormouth Maybelle (Queen Latifah). Tracy believes this is unfair, and with help from others–including Motormouth Maybelle, Motormouth's son and Penny's boyfriend Seaweed (Elijah Kelley), Tracy's boyfriend Link (Zac Efron), her father (Christopher Walken), and her mother–she sets out to integrate the show.

This spoof of 1950s' monster/sci-fi/horror films follows a "mild-mannered" reporter, a professor, and the professor's son as they try to get to the bottom of why dead people (and a dog) are turning up in closets. After a few more murders, they find the cause to be a monster. Now, how to get rid of it–bombs, xylophone playing, etc. don't work. Maybe the army will have to destroy all closets.

The problem is the lack of talent, and they want to impress Broadway producer Mort Guffman who has been invited to the show. The dream continues as they try to make the most out of what they have. The closing credits are a highlight of this film.
