In this remake of "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" (1967), Marilyn (Judith Scott) and Percy (Bernie Mac) are celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary. Their daughter, Theresa (Zoe Saldana), and her live-in boyfriend, Simon (Ashton Kutcher), arrive for the weekend. As protective Black parents, Percy and Marilyn are shocked when they discover that Simon is a White male, and, to make matters worse, Percy suspects that Simon is lying about something. A relaxing weekend is not in the cards.

One evening, Alan runs into his college roommate Charlie Fineman (Adam Sandler) and learns that Charlie once had everything Alan has, but Charlie's wife and children died when the plane crashed into the World Trade Center on 9/11. Charlie now suffers post-traumatic stress disorder. When Alan realizes that Charlie needs help, their friendship is rekindled. Alan hangs out with Charlie and draws him back, at least part-way, into the normal world and, in the process recognizes and finds solutions for his own troubles.

Audrey's (Halle Berry) husband Steven (David Duchovny) is killed trying to protect a battered woman, and at his wake she turns to Steven's friend Jerry (Benicio Del Toro) who–through flashbacks–reveals that he and Steven were close friends. While Steven was a successful real-estate broker, Jerry is a loser and drug addict. Audrey needs someone to turn to and invites Jerry to move in with her and her children (Alexis Llewellyn and Micah Berry). Jerry bonds with the family, and, despite their differences, Jerry and Audrey develop a mutual dependency on each other.
