This film rates high for historical accuracy as it recreates events before, during, and after the 1836 siege at the Alamo when a group of Texans–including Davy Crockett (Billy Bob Thornton) and James Bowie (Jason Patric)–tried to hold off Santa Anna's Mexican forces. Inside the Alamo, they try unsuccessfully during a 13-day siege to defend the Spanish mission, and Sam Houston (Dennis Quaid) and his troops retaliate after the fall of the Alamo.

As Ann Lord (Vanessa Redgrave) lies in bed dying, she drifts in and out of sleep while being nursed by Mrs. Brown (Eileen Atkins) who is giving her morphine to relieve the pain. While sleeping, Ann goes back in time to when she was a young Ann (Claire Danes) attending the Newport, Rhode Island, wedding of her good friend Lila Wittenborn (Mamie Gummer). At that long-ago reception, Ann meets Harris Arden (Patrick Wilson), and her love for him will change her life forever. Now, in her dying moments, she keeps mumbling the words "mistakes" and "Harris" leaving her daughters (Toni Collette and Natasha Richardson) wondering what their mother is really talking about.

The year is 1985 in an alternate universe, and the tensions between the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. have reached an all-time high. The Watchmen, who are costumed adventurers, must come to the rescue. Their groups are divided into Generation 1 from the 1940s and Generation 2, which followed. One member of Gen 2, Laurie/Silk Spectre (Malin Ackerman), spans both Generations because she is the child of a Gen 1 member (Carla Gugino). Gen 1 Watchmen have moved on; Ozymandias (Matthew Goode) has become a head of industry, and Dr. Manhattan (Billy Crudup) is now a physicist. When The Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) is killed, his former colleague Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley) joins forces with his group of retired Gen 2 Watchmen to uncover a plot to rid the world of superheroes. The nuclear clock is ticking, and Rorschach sees a conspiracy that reaches both Generations, and the battle is on to save humanity.
