The Vatican sends emissary Father Kinsella (Martin Sheen) to a remote monastery where the Abbot (Trevor Howard) lives in relative seclusion and refuses to adapt to contemporary times. The Abbot has been using the Latin Mass, which is not what the Church is using in the modern day. The Abbot is torn between keeping his Latin Mass or giving in to the powers of his Church.
