Attempts were made to make the famous battle as close to fact as was possible in this Ted Turner production based on the Pulitzer prizewinning novel "The Killer Angels." Confederate Generals Lee (Martin Sheen) and Longstreet (Tom Berenger) make preparations for battle while Union Col. Chamberlain (Jeff Daniels) moves his troops into position. Meanwhile, Union General Buford (Sam Elliott) attacks Confederate troops trying to get into position. The story uses both Union and Confederate perspectives to provide a good interpretation of the famous Battle of Gettysburg that claimed 53,000 lives. Both the acting and battle scenes are excellent.
