  Billy Fisher (Tom Courtenay) works at a funeral home but daydreams himself into a fantasy world where he is the hero. When Billy lies to cover a few indiscretions, it doesn't take long before the lies grow to take over a large portion of his life. Billy is engaged to two women and is in love with a third, Liz (Julie Christie). It is Liz who helps Billy get his life in order. He moves out of his parents' (Wilfred Pickles and Mona Washbourne) home, and Billy and Liz leave for London. But, by story's end, Billy's imagination again takes over, and he moves back to his parents' home.

  Based on Henry De Vere Stacpoole's novel, this is the story of British children Michael Reynolds (Peter Rudolph Jones) and Emmeline (Susan Stranks) who are marooned on a deserted island with sailor Paddy Button (Noel Purcell). After a few years, Paddy dies, and Emmeline and Michael grow into adulthood. Now, young adults Michael (now played by Donald Houston) and Emmeline (now played by Jean Simmons) fall in love and become parents while waiting to be rescued.

This is the story of Robin Hood, his merrie men, and his true love Maid Marian (Joan Rice) and their efforts to preserve the throne for King Richard (Patrick Barr).
