Kitty 1945 N/R, 103 min. Genre: Drama
Director: Mitchell Leisen Cast: Paulette Goddard, Ray Milland, Patric Knowles, Reginald Owen, Cecil Kellaway, Constance Collier, Dennis Hoey, Eric Blore, Sara Allgood, Mary Gordon, Gordon Richards, Michael Dyne, Edgar Norton, Patricia Cameron, Percival Vivian
Set in England during the 18th century, this is the story of street urchin Kitty (Paulette Goddard) who steals artist Thomas Gainsborough's (Cecil Kellaway) shoes, and he then paints her picture. The picture rouses interest in his noble friends, and Kitty is taken under the wing of Sir Hugh Marcy (Ray Milland) and alcoholic Lady Susan Dowitt (Constance Collier) who plan to transform Kitty into a lady. Through marriage to the Duke of Malmunster (Reginald Owen), Kitty becomes a duchess, but, as she rises in the social world, it becomes obvious that class distinctions do not change basic personalities. 1 User Review

| | Pre-Pretty Woman/My Fair Lady | Hedy 07/11/2012 | "Kitty" is one of the original Pygmaillion story lines. The novel was pretty racy for it's time and toned down quite a bit in this film. Milland is a very convincing scoundrel and Goddard was pretty good coming from the gutter to become a duchess but ConstanceCollier, as Lady Susan, was great. Unfortunately her scenes were cut short and left the film wanting with the expected ending.
Every young girl aught to see this fun film for a liberal education. |
