  During the French Revolution, Robespierre (Wojciech Pszoniak) and Georges Danton (Gerard Depardieu) represented opposing ideas on how best to carry out the plans for liberty, equality, and fraternity. Robespierre's "Reign of Terror" prevailed, and Danton joined the aristocrats on the guillotine.

  Based on Joseph Conrad's short story "The Return," this film begins with Jean Hervey (Pascal Greggory) extolling the virtues of his "perfect" marriage to his wife Gabrielle (Isabelle Huppert). But, everything changes when Jean arrives home one day and finds a note from Gabrielle telling Jean that she is leaving him. Jean is miserable, and matters do not change much when Gabrielle returns home prepared to carry on with their now "less-than-perfect" marriage. Many struggles lie ahead for both of them.
