When sailors arrive in Long Beach, Lt. Vic Donald (Pat Boone) and local resident Sally Hobson (Barbara Eden) fall in love. Soon, it is time for the ship to sail for the Aleutians, and Vic must leave Sally behind. One sailor, Shrieking Eagle Garfield (Buddy Hackett), brings a stowaway turkey on board and has more than a few problems hiding it from the captain, LCdr. Brian O'Gara (Dennis O'Keefe). When the ship does return to Long Beach, Sally smuggles herself aboard to be near Vic. Her actions are ill-timed because Cdr. Bintle (Gale Gordon) is arriving for an inspection. Along with Carla, whose geologist husband was killed when he attempted the same journey, and their guide Hans (Peter Ronson), they journey through an extinct volcano into Earth's core. On the trek, they encounter floods, winds, and treacherous areas of heat and cold–along with prehistoric beasts and Count Saknussemm (Thayer David) who killed Carla's husband and has been striving to be the first person to reach the center of Earth. Special effects are what earn this film its three stars.
