The year is 2018, and crime and wars have ended–corporations, not nations, rule the world. Rollerball is supported by those in power as a futuristic sport combining danger and excitement and is allowed because it gives society a release from pent-up hostilities and teaches the power of teamwork. Corporate executives ask champion rollerball player Jonathan E. (James Caan) to retire because they fear that he is so popular with the people that he has power over them. When Jonathan E. refuses to retire, the rules of the game are changed to make rollerball a fight to the death. But even that does not stop Jonathan E. from participating with his teammates in the sport of rollerball.
