In England during the middle of the 19th century, Oscar (Ralph Fiennes) and Lucinda (Cate Blanchett) are outcasts–Oscar is a defrocked Anglican priest, and Lucinda is a liberated heiress who dreams of building a church made almost entirely of glass from her factory. Both are gamblers, and Lucinda bets Oscar that he cannot successfully transport the glass church to the Australian outback.
