After losing his entire crew during a helicopter crash in the Bering Sea, U.S. Coast Guard Rescue Swimmer Ben Randall (Kevin Costner) is transferred to the Coast Guard's Aviation Survival Center where he is to teach cadets +survival training. Hotshot high-school swim champion Jake Fischer (Ashton Kutcher) is among the students in Ben's class, and they are destined to clash. In the 1980s, postal worker Hector Negron (Laz Alfonso) unexpectedly shoots a customer, and now Daily News reporter Tim Boyle (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) searches for the story behind the shooting. Through flashbacks, the story is told about four World War II soldiers–Cpl. Negron, Sgt. Stamps (Derek Luke), Sgt. Cummings (Michael Ealy), and Pfc. Train (Omar Benson Miller)–from the all-Black "Buffalo Soldier" Division who are trapped behind enemy lines. Their fellow soldiers have been killed, and they are the sole survivors, but they find relative safety in an Italian village and relate to some of the residents. As the flashbacks progress, they reveal how Negron's shooting relates to an encounter in that village 40 years ago.

Impaired by his weed smoking, Next Day Air deliveryman Leo (Donald Faison) accidentally delivers 10 kilos of grade-A cocaine to inept criminals Brody (Mike Epps) and Guch (Wood Harris). They plot to sell the cocaine to Brody's cousin Shavoo (Omari Hardwick) who just happens to be a drug dealer. Meanwhile, the intended recipients of the cocaine package, mobster Jesus (Cisco Reyes) and his girlfriend Chita (Yasmin Deliz) start searching for the package before drug lord Bodega (Emilio Rivera) learns that it is missing. Double-crosses and schemes lie ahead in what will culminate in an all-out battle for what amounts to a million dollars in cash and drugs.
