Even more difficult to face is the fact that Fiona's affections have transferred to a fellow patient: mute, wheelchair bound Aubrey (Michael Murphy). The story involves M'Lynn (Sally Field), how she deals with her daughter Shelby's (Julia Roberts) failing health, and the relationships among the women–among them are nasty gossip Ouiser (Shirley MacLaine) and recently widowed Clairee (Olympia Dukakis)–she sees regularly at the beauty shop. Julia Roberts received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
