  Timofeyev (Malcolm McDowell) lies in a Russian mental hospital and believes that he assassinated Tsar Nicholas II and the members of the royal family during the 1918 Russian Revolution over 70 years ago. His doctor (Oleg Yankovsky) becomes obsessed with the story and heads to the place of the assassination to find out the facts as the two relive the event.

  This story begins in Russia during 1927 when the father of a young Jewish girl, Fegele (Claudia Lander-Duke), leaves to find a better life for himself in America. Fegele is sent to London where her name is changed to Suzie. Later, a grown-up Suzie (Christina Ricci) joins a cabaret group, travels to Paris, and is taken under the wing of fellow performer Lola (Cate Blanchett). Lola begins an affair with an Italian tenor (John Turturro), while Suzie's interests lie with a Gypsy horse trainer (Johnny Depp). It isn't long before the Nazis take over Paris, and Suzie is again forced to move to safer surroundings.
