The family runs a snack bar on the banks of Seoul's Han River. One day, a slimy monster–the product of toxic chemicals that were tossed in the river six years ago–appears and spreads panic. It grabs Hyun-seo and drags her beneath the murky river. But, miraculously, she is not dead and uses a cell phone to contact her family. The government refuses to help, so the family members set out on their own to rescue her.

In this conclusion to Park Chan-wook's "Vengeance Trilogy"–following "Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance" (2002) and "Oldboy" (2003)–Lee Geum-ja (Lee Yeong-ae) plots revenge on Mr. Baek (Choi Min-sik) after he forced her to take the rap for the murder of a young boy. Following her 13 years in prison, Lee Geum-ja is released and uses her network of women she helped in prison to find her daughter who Mr. Baek allowed to be adopted by an Australian couple. She then proceeds with plans for exacting revenge against Mr. Baek, but Lee Geum-ja begins to realize that revenge is not always sweet and could, in fact, prove bitter.
