Ex-journalist Tom Richards (James Cagney) is a vagrant who happens into a newspaper job in a small town. After failed attempts, wealthy dowager Gashouse Mary (Marjorie Main) comes to Tom's aid and tells him about an embezzlement plot. Tom publishes the story and puts an end to the corruption.
