A spaceship from a doomed planet lands in Southern California carrying in it an alien, Celeste Martin (Kim Basinger) who just happens to have a snake that she carries in her purse. Her mission is to find an inept scientist, Steven Mills (Dan Aykroyd) who might be able to re-create a ray that has affected the gravity on her planet. Steven falls in love with her, but his teenage daughter Jessie (Alyson Hannigan) becomes suspicious about her father's new love interest.
