Existentialism is the theme for this Ingmar Bergman film about Death (Bengt Ekerot) claiming a 14th-century knight, Antonius Block (Max von Sydow), who is returning to Sweden after spending 10 years in the Crusades. The Crusades have left Antonius cynical about the existence of God, and he challenges Death to a game of chess to gain time before passing on. Sweden is engulfed in a plague, and, with turmoil surrounding them, Death and Antonius discuss whether or not there is a God as they play the chess game.
