Her action causes much concern among her friends who are wealthy, married couples–millionaire Frannie (Joan Cusack) and Matt (Greg Germann), fashion designer Jane (Frances McDormand) and Aaron (Simon McBurney), and scriptwriter Christine (Catherine Keener) and David (Jason Isaacs). Although her friends pity Olivia, will their money really buy happiness for any of them?

  Kate (Catherine Keener) and her husband Alex (Oliver Platt) own a trendy furniture store in Manhattan, and Kate, who suffers guilt over her good financial state, gives money to the poor. At the same time, she stops her teenage daughter Abby (Sarah Steele) from buying expensive clothing. Meanwhile, their apartment is small, and they have bought the apartment next door and are waiting for their 91-year-old tenant, Andra (Ann Morgan Guilbert), to die so that they can knock out a wall and use Andra's apartment to enlarge their living space. Kate tries to make friends with Andra and her granddaughters Mary and Rebecca (Amanda Peete and Rebecca Hall), but they do not cooperate in this story about middle-class values.
