Maddy (Aleksa Palladino), a girl in her late teens, lives in Lulu's (Claire Bloom) rooming house and works in a garage. She is lonely after her best friend marries and moves away. Maddy meets Claire (Joely Richardson), another boarder, who is pregnant from a one-night-stand. The two decide to hit the road in search of an abortion and to get away from their current status.
