In the 1950s, during the Cold War, a B-52 Superfortress takes a test flight from the U.S. to Africa and then back home again. When not flying his B-52, Air Force pilot Col. Jim Herlihy (Efrem Zimbalist Jr.) is romancing young Lois (Natalie Wood). The problem is that Lois is the daughter of ground-crew chief Sgt. Chuck Brennan (Karl Malden) who has no trust or respect for Herlihy and has trouble believing this could be a match made in heaven.

Dr. Marvin and his team develop a missile that, when fired, shatters the flying saucers. But big problems result from the attack, and the saucers crash into Washington, D.C., landmarks.
