Eventually, nine go on trial, but all are acquitted. However, the populace does not agree with the verdicts, and a series of lynchings result. This made-for-HBO film is based on a true story.

The year is 1962, and rich-kid Lawrence Whatley Bourne III, who has run up a gambling debt that his wealthy father (George Plimpton) will not pay, sneaks aboard a Peace Corps plane headed to Thailand. Lawrence's seat partner on the plane is Peace Corps worker Tom Tuttle (John Candy). They meet and become friends. Their mission in Thailand is to build a bridge for the local villagers, but opposing forces–the local Communists, an opium warlord, and the CIA–have their own unique plans for the bridge. With help from English speaking At Toon (Gedde Watanabe), Lawrence and Tom finally figure out what is really best for the villagers.
