At a time when anti-Jewish riots were commonplace, this mixed-ethnic pairing leads to nothing but problems. This film was nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Film.

  While doing community service as his sentence for jumping from a London skyscraper (he is obsessed with flying), Richard is assigned to wheelchair-confined Jane (Helena Bonham Carter). Jane's degenerative motor-neuron disease makes speech difficult and, at first, the two do not get along. But, they are stuck with each other and soon form a bond. When Jane confides that she wants a meaningful sexual relationship before she dies, Richard helps find a mate.
