Director: Alain Resnais Cast: Delphine Seyrig, Jean-Pierre Kerien, Nita Klein, Jean-Baptiste Thierree, Claude Sainval, Laurence Badie, Jean Champion, Jean Daste, Martine Vatel, Philippe Laudenbach, Nelly Borgeaud, Julien Verdier
Memory and its effect on present-day lives is the theme of this Alain Resnais film about a widowed antiques dealer, Helene (Delphine Seyrig), who attempts to rekindle a romance with an old lover, Alphonse (Jean-Pierre Kerien). But, Helene's memory is playing tricks on her, and Alphonse is not the way she remembered. Matters are further complicated by Helene's troubled stepson who suffers from his own memory problems–and then there is Alphonse's 20-year-old lover Francoise (Nita Klein). The use of montage, overlapping dialogue, and photography provide a haunting quality to this story of attempting to reach an accord between memories and the present.
