Based on Bret Easton Ellis' popular novel that is a biting account of the 1980s' young, rich, adult culture in Los Angeles, this film attempts to capture the mood of the book. Clay (Andrew McCarthy) is home from his first year in college for the Christmas holidays. His old girlfriend, Blair (Jami Gertz), is now seeing Julian (Robert Downey Jr.). While Clay makes a play for Blair, Julian becomes more and more addicted to cocaine, and his drug debts are mounting–forcing him to prostitute himself in order to get money.
