Remembering this movie was made in 1949, I was charmed by the picture of life as it used to be. Walter Brennan is a character you love to hate and love to love at the same time. Natalie Wood is as charming as ever and though the story line is a bit thin and the ending predictable, it is a feel good bit of fluff . Wlater Brennan and Natalie Wood are a good combination for the black and white cinema.

Inside Daisy Clover-Must come out on DVDBigDinTampa 08/03/2007
I have seen this movie several times on television and saw it in theaters when it first came out. This is a very touching and moving story of a young neglected girls rag to riches story. She lives in a small trailer with her mother played by Ruth Gordon who gives a wonderful performance. Daisy, played by Natalie Wood, makes a demo record at a carny area on the beach. She is soon discovered and made into a star by a ruthless movie mogul played by Christopher Plummer. He demands that she plays a sweet innocent little girl, but she is soon corrupted by a good looking actor played by Robert Redford, who leads her down the wrong path. He is out for one thing and the naive girl falls for his act. The sexual twist is worth waiting for and the performances were stellar. This movie should be rated 3 and 1/2 stars.

Among the most complex Ford westerns, if not the best1fatts 03/14/2007
Anyone who knows American movies knows this one. I don't think it is more quintessentially "American" than the Ford Cavalry Trilogy, but there is an edge to it which sets it apart. There is an emptiness in John Wayne's Ethan Edwards that marks him and separates him so fundamentally from everything around him that we are limited in our sympathy for him and find it only appropriate that he both begins and ends the film as the outsider and perhaps the outcast.
The movie is not without flaws. Structurally, we never see what it is that changes Ethan's intention to kill Debbie and, therefore, while we are willing to accept it emotionally, it doesn't really work in terms of the plot setup.
More seriously, the whole film sets us up for a confrontation between Edwards and Scar, and, in the end, we don't get that confrontation. That is a significant weakness.
But it is a great western. Monument Valley has rarely been used to better effect. Ford's stock company all acquit themselves well, and we have a chance to appreciate John Wayne in a more complex role than we usually get to see him.
