He also introduces Christian to Satine (Nicole Kidman). Christian falls in love, but Satine is promised to the wealthy Duke of Montroth (Richard Roxburgh) who just happens to be financing the show. Complications ensue amidst dazzling musical numbers. The film received eight Academy Award nominations and won for Best Costume Design and Art Direction. Nominations included Best Picture and Actress (Nicole Kidman).

Joseph Cable (Harry Connick Jr.) romances Liat (Natalie Jackson Mendoza), the daughter of Bloody Mary (Lori Tan Chinn), and they enter into a love affair amidst the Bali Ha'i tropical breezes.
