That single event redirected Homer's future as, undaunted by his mine-superintendent father's (Chris Cooper) reticence, he entered the space age to become a NASA engineer.

Billy Bob Thornton received an Oscar nomination for Best Actor and won an Oscar for Best Screenplay.
