Rich and sophisticated Frederique (Stephane Audran), a bisexual, picks up a poor Bohemian, Why (Jacqueline Sassard), seduces her, and takes her to his villa in St. Tropez. While there, Why meets and falls for an architect, Paul (Jean-Louis Trintignant). Frederique also makes a play for him, and before long the two head to Paris, leaving Why to suffer alone.

As the third daughter, young Belle (Josette Day) is exploited by her family and works as their servant. After much wooing, Belle falls in love with the bewitching Beast who gives her a key and tells her that if she fails to return it to him he will die of grief.
