  Michael (Frank Whaley) meets and is taken home by beautiful Sarah (Christine Harnos) who lives with her mother (Sheree North) and an obnoxious dog. The dog dies, and Sarah asks Michael to dispose of it and hurry back for fun and games. Outside, while deciding what to do, along comes cabbie Jack (Randy Quaid) who convinces Michael to sell the dog rather than dispose of it. Thus begins a zany journey through town to sell the dog, with Jack quoting parables all the way while Michael wants to get back to Sarah's.

But, Sammy is not interested in the arranged marriage and is in love with Linda Low (Nancy Kwan) who happens to be romantically involved with Wang Ta (James Shigeta). Through comedy and music, lovers are sorted out, and, by story's end, Mei Li and Wang Ta have found romance. Songs include "I Enjoy Being a Girl," "Love Look Away," and "You Are Beautiful."

After the deception is revealed, Robert becomes involved with Kay O'Neill (Sylvia Syms) who helps him sell his paintings, and Suzie and playboy Ben Marlowe (Michael Wilding) become an item. Those affairs end, and romance begins between Suzie and Robert, which, after a tragedy ensues, ends with Robert asking Suzie to marry him.
