After one of his patients dies following surgery, Dr. Cromwell (Lyle Talbot) is tried for murder and acquitted. Evans is killed, but Cromwell is saved and nursed back to health by Klondike (Thelma Todd) with whom he falls in love. But, Klondike is engaged to Jim Armstrong (Jason Robards Sr.) who needs an operation to save his life. Now, Cromwell faces a dilemma: if he does perform the surgery and succeeds, will he be handing Jim back to Klondike?
