The story involves Eddie's match with Minnesota Fats and also covers his romance with alcoholic Sarah (Piper Laurie), his teaming up with backer Bert Gordon (George C. Scott), and the tragic trip to Louisville for a big match with Findlay (Murray Hamilton).
