In 1935, Shadrach (John Franklin Sawyer), a former slave, turned 101 and returned to his Virginia plantation where he wants to be buried. But, living on the land are the Dabneys–Vernon (Harvey Keitel) and his wife Trixie (Andie MacDowell) and their many children. According to Virginia law, it is illegal to bury a black man on that property; however, the Dabney's hatch a plot that satisfies all involved.
