Scottish Professor Lindenbrook (James Mason) and his student Alec McEwen (Pat Boone) travel to Iceland at the beginning of their journey to the center of Earth. Along with Carla, whose geologist husband was killed when he attempted the same journey, and their guide Hans (Peter Ronson), they journey through an extinct volcano into Earth's core. On the trek, they encounter floods, winds, and treacherous areas of heat and cold–along with prehistoric beasts and Count Saknussemm (Thayer David) who killed Carla's husband and has been striving to be the first person to reach the center of Earth. Special effects are what earn this film its three stars.
