Jeff and Amy Taylor (Kurt Russell and Kathleen Quinlan) leave Massachusetts to embark on a cross-country trip. Their new Jeep breaks down in a Southwest desert, and Amy accepts a ride from truck driver Red Barr (J.T. Walsh) who offers to take her to a diner where she can call for help. Jeff manages to fix the Jeep, but Amy has not returned. After driving to the diner, Jeff meets Red who claims that he never saw Amy. Jeff files a missing person's report and learns that there are others who have disappeared while traveling that stretch of desert. Now, the question is: Who can Jeff trust?

John Malkovich plays feeble-minded Lennie who is in need of support and protection by his friend George (Gary Sinise). They find work at a ranch in the San Joaquin Valley, but the foreman, Curley (Casey Siemaszko), torments Lennie, and Curley's wife (Sherilyn Fenn) flirts with Lennie–all of which leads to a tragic end.
