  Jeff and Amy Taylor (Kurt Russell and Kathleen Quinlan) leave Massachusetts to embark on a cross-country trip. Their new Jeep breaks down in a Southwest desert, and Amy accepts a ride from truck driver Red Barr (J.T. Walsh) who offers to take her to a diner where she can call for help. Jeff manages to fix the Jeep, but Amy has not returned. After driving to the diner, Jeff meets Red who claims that he never saw Amy. Jeff files a missing person's report and learns that there are others who have disappeared while traveling that stretch of desert. Now, the question is: Who can Jeff trust?

  Part of the job of a cab driver is to listen to the problems of his fares; this theme pervades throughout the story, which takes place one Christmas Eve in the life of a Chicago hack, Johnny (Paul Dillon). During his 14-hour shift in frigid weather, Johnny transports a scary man (John Cusack), a geek (Tim Reinhard), a rape victim (Julianne Moore), and others who he observes through his rear-view mirror and listens to their stories along the way.

  This remake of John Steinbeck's novel about California migrant workers during the Great Depression is well worth watching. John Malkovich plays feeble-minded Lennie who is in need of support and protection by his friend George (Gary Sinise). They find work at a ranch in the San Joaquin Valley, but the foreman, Curley (Casey Siemaszko), torments Lennie, and Curley's wife (Sherilyn Fenn) flirts with Lennie–all of which leads to a tragic end.
