In the 1960s, Detroit's Wayne State University Electrical Engineering professor, Robert Kearns (Greg Kinnear), has invented the intermittent windshield wiper. Kearns and his friend Gil Previck (Dermot Mulroney) take the prototype to the Ford motor company, but the company says they are not interested. Just a few years later, Ford proceeds to install the wipers on their new models. Kearns sues the company, and the litigation goes on for years. Finally, Kearns is awarded $30 million, but he loses his mind and his wife Phyllis (Lauren Graham) and family in the process.

Plenty of satire and rip-offs of other films. Fun, in a sordid sort of way.
