Struggling mother Ray Eddy (Melissa Leo) is left by her gambling husband and now must find the cash needed to raise her sons–15-year-old T.J. (Charlie McDermott) and 5-year-old Ricky (James Reilly). Her salary working part-time at the Yankee Dollar Store will not pay the bills, but Ray finds the means when she meets Lila (Misty Upham) who is driving the family car that Ray's husband abandoned at a bus station. Lila is a Mohawk who, for cash, smuggles illegal immigrants across the frozen St. Lawrence River. After confrontations, the women join forces, and, keeping their eyes out for the state troopers and conditions of the river, they gas up the car and make dangerous trips across the river. The film received two Academy Award nominations including Melissa Leo for Best Actress.
