  A paid assassin, Trabucco (Walter Matthau), checks into a hotel room adjoining that of Victor Clooney (Jack Lemmon) who is depressed suicidal over his impending divorce. Just as Trabucco is about to shoot his prey, Victor interrupts him, which sets off a series of miscues, mistaken identity, and misdirected actions in this perfectly played farce.
