During the Civil War, the border between Missouri and Kansas became a hotbed when Quantrill's (Walter Pidgeon) Raiders attacked, murdered, and pillaged innocent citizens. Into the fray comes Bob Seton (John Wayne) who had become the Marshal by defeating Quantrill in an election. In the meantime, both are in love with Mary McCloud (Claire Trevor), which adds fuel to the fire.
