  Set in the 1970s, this is the story of Bess (Emily Watson) who marries outside her Scottish Calvinist community after falling in love with oil-rigger Jan (Stellan Skarsgard). When he is injured, Bess goes to any extreme to bring Jan back to health, and, in the process, Bess displays how love and religious fervor are basic to her very being.

  This film provides a look into the empty lives of mental hospital patients at the end of the 1950s era. Tregenza's story line is minimal, but the black-and-white cinematography takes the viewer deep inside the lost souls who are mentally and physically isolated in their bleak environment.
