The inch-tall Nilians arrive at the Statue of Liberty aboard their human-shaped spacecraft "Dave" (Eddie Murphy) on which the captain (also Murphy) operates from the ship's bridge–between "Dave's" eyes. Months earlier, the Nilians had sent an orb to suck up Earth's water, but it went astray and ended up in 5th-grader Josh's (Austyn Myers) bedroom. Now, "Dave"–controlled by the captain and crew–works its way across New York City where "Dave" meets Josh in an attempt to regain the orb. "Dave" meets and befriends Josh's widowed mother Gina (Elizabeth Banks), and then problems develop when it is learned that "Dave's" energy supply is damaged, and the mission must be performed during the next 48 hours while the ship still has enough energy to take off.
