Now it is the 1960s, and Sandy is with hippie girlfriend Jennifer (Carol Kane), while Jonathan is again single. Sandy's question: "If you had the choice...would you rather love a girl or have her love you?" is still a puzzlement for both. The film made a name for Ann-Margret who won an Oscar nomination for her role as Bobbie.

Charlie manages to squeeze money out of a House subcommittee giving the Afghan resistance the means to fight off the Soviet invaders. Throughout the 1980s, money was provided, and, by the end of the decade, the Soviets were on the run–thanks to Charlie. Hoffman received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

One problem on Earth is that, when aroused, his "equipment" makes a whirring noise, an irritating consequence of the equipment. He meets Susan (Annette Bening) and decides she's the one.
