In this film adaptation of Oscar Wilde's 1892 play, "Lady Windermere's Fan," the scene is now set in the 1930s when Manhattan socialite Mrs. Erlynne (Helen Hunt) leaves her sullied and debt-ridden reputation behind and heads for the Amalfi coast of Italy hoping to start life anew. She is befriended by Meg and Robert Windemere (Scarlett Johansson and Mark Umbers), but gossip rears its ugly head after Tom helps her out financially, and now stories abound that Tom and Mrs. Erlynne are having an affair. Everyone seems to believe the gossip–except Tuppy (Tom Wilkinson) who has fallen in love with Mrs. Erlynne, and then there is Lord Darlington who is smitten with Meg and sees the scandal as his opportunity to seduce her.
