American ex-patriots–aspiring artist Paul Sloan (Dick Van Dyke) and struggling writer Casey Barnett (James Garner)–live together in Paris. When Paul is told by his art dealer that his paintings will be more valuable if he is dead, his solution is to fake his suicide, and he and Casey can live off the higher price tags. This film is based on the real-life experiences of World War II hero Guy Gabaldon. The story begins when Guy (Richard Eyer) is being raised by a Japanese-American family and how, after the family is sent to a relocation camp following the attack on Pearl Harbor, Guy (now played by Jeffrey Hunter) enlists in the U.S. Marine Corps. After a fling with his buddies (David Janssen and Vic Damone), Guy is sent to Saipan. Because of his knowledge of Japanese customs and language, he is able to help save Saipan civilians hiding in caves and even persuades Gen. Matsui (Sessue Hayakawa) and his troops to surrender.

His friend, Major Lloyd Gruver (Marlon Brando), is prejudiced but reluctantly agrees to be the best man at the wedding. Later, Lloyd falls in love with Japanese entertainer Hana-ogi (Miiko Taka) and overcomes his prejudice, which results in the Army stepping in and sending soldiers who marry Japanese women home without their spouses. In the case of Lloyd and Joe, one of the marriages ends in tragedy, while the other promises hope for the future. Red Buttons and Miyoshi Umeki won Best Supporting Actor and Actress for their roles in this film.
