As Father Edward J. Flanagan (Spencer Tracy) strives to set up a community for homeless boys, he runs into trouble with one boy, Whitey Marsh (Mickey Rooney), whose older brother (Edward Norris) is a gangster. Whitey runs away a number of times and finally manages to join his brother's gang. But, Father Flanagan and the boys capture the gang, and Whitey, at last, respects Father Flanagan's program and has hope for the future. Spencer Tracy won an Academy Award as Best Actor for his role in this film (his second consecutive Best Actor Oscar). Nominations were received for Best Picture and Director, and another Oscar was received for Best Original Story.

The leader turns out to be Johnny's brother who survived the family's slaughter and was raised by "The Cat." An unusual Western.

Along the way to Somerville, Dick picks up Marion (Evalyn Knapp) and gives her a ride. Dick puts moves on Marion, and she slaps him. It turns out that Marion is the Reverend's granddaughter, and, for the first time in his life, Dick is really in love. They do marry, but before Dick can introduce Marion to his father, she is hired by his father as his private secretary, and her identity is kept secret. His father is impressed with Marion, who Dick works diligently for, and soon tells Dick that he wishes that Dick had married Marion.
