Jane (Frances McDormand), a Los Angeles record producer, has been enjoying houseguests in her Laurel Canyon home. The guests–a British rock band including her boyfriend, Ian (Allessandro Nivola), who is the band's young lead singer–partake in more than a few pot and poolside parties. When Jane's son Sam (Christian Bale) and wife Alex (Kate Beckinsale)–both recent graduates of Harvard Medical School–arrive for a visit, Sam is disturbed by his mother's lifestyle, but Alex is intrigued by this unfamiliar environment.
