  Spectacular scenery of Ireland forms the early backdrop of this film about Irish immigrants who come to America in the late 1800s in search of land. Tenant farmer Joseph Donnelly (Tom Cruise) is working in western Ireland when his father is killed during a protest against ruthless landowner Daniel Christie (Robert Prosky). Joseph seeks vengeance, but Daniel's daughter Shannon (Nicole Kidman) stabs Joseph. While he is recovering, Shannon convinces Joseph to join her on a trip to America to acquire land during the Oklahoma land rush. Shannon and Joseph set out on the voyage but encounter obstacles along the way. They finally arrive in Oklahoma and have fallen in love, but Shannon's father is now following them with plans to take Shannon back home to Ireland.
